‘To produce a luxury garment which would be purchased either for oneself or as a gift for someone going into hospital.’

Jemma, came up a concept that required a total of 12 garments for patients within the hospital. With an opportunity to expand the business, Jemma saw the potential of developing a gift package.

Genuis Roof Solutions Ltd is a family distribution business (three sisters), which offers premises, logistics, packaging and funding. After spending a lot of time in and around hospitals and patients a few years ago, Director, Jemma Green, felt it was important for patients to feel confident and relaxed at all times throughout the duration of their stay in hospital.

Jemma Green saw the hospital gown as unflattering and undignified and believed that there was a market to produce a comfortable and luxurious product, to replace the standard NHS issue hospital gown. She contacted UCLan, looking to design and supply an innovative clothing garment range, suitable for patients of all ages.

The objectives of the project, ‘OPTOP’, were:

Initial Research:
‘Source imagery to further represent the tone and feel of the proposed styles'
Further Research:
‘To propose material compositions which will best provide functionality, fit and feel’

Design Development:
'Stitching Styles | fabric patterns & types | CAD flats | presentation of designs to client- client feedback | sketching and sourcing of final designs’

Final Designs:
‘Presentation of four designs (front and back closing versions) put together in an illustrative tech pack including samples’

Jasmin Gaskell and Carrie Colaluca of BA(Hons) Fashion Design, worked extensively with the School of ADF team and Genius Roof Solutions Ltd over a total of four weeks on this project. They successfully designed and made a total of four garments aimed at different age groups and genders. Together with the clients, they agreed upon the final choices of fabric, design (pattern) and overall feel of the pieces.

This project enabled Jasmin and Carrie to build on their portfolios, enhancing opportunities to progress within the industry.
